Abstract


The phenomena of informal sector’s behavior at the pu space of traditional market should be considered in the design rocess of the market. The purpose of this research is to find out the characteri tic of space, and attribute. As the focus of this research, the attributes are explored by correlating activity of the informal sector and its setting. This includies a phys cal, spatial setting, and physical traces. The study has been conducted on Pasar legi Surakarta for its superlative size and role to the city. Twelve cases of activities and setting of public space were taken. They are grouped into 4 types public space including entrance, ll, ramp, and yard. Some field interviews were conducted to the informal sector and other related person.Categorization of data was done after analyzing 2 cases of the public space of the pasar Legi. The result of this research are firstly the characteri of space can be described as the sitting of the vendors (informal sector) is close to consumer circulation space, walls and columns are located behind the vendors and t e floor are setting up to display the commoditi, physical traces are found as rubbish and other staffs remained in the public space, space in the middle is more dirty than those at the vicinity. Secondly attributes found are accessibility, visibility, territoriality, comfort, adaptability, sociality, and personality.
